Georgia Entry Requirements 2026: Visa & Insurance Checklist

Georgia entry requirements in 2026 depend on your passport, any qualifying foreign visa or residence permit, and the purpose of your visit. Tourists covered by the insurance rules must also carry health and accident insurance with at least 30,000 GEL of cover for the full stay. Use the checklist below to identify your entry route and prepare the documents before travelling to Georgia, the country in the Caucasus.

Georgia entry requirements: your pre-flight checklist

Prepare a travel folder for each person, including children:

• A valid passport or another travel document accepted for your specific entry route.
• A Georgian visa, if required, or the documents proving your visa-free eligibility.
• Health and accident insurance that meets the tourist-entry requirements.
• Accommodation details, your trip plan and return or onward arrangements.
• Evidence that you can fund the visit, ready to show if requested.

Keep names, passport details and travel dates consistent across bookings and documents. Save copies offline as well as keeping the originals available. A confirmation stored only in an email account is less useful when you cannot get online at check-in.

Start with the official Georgian consular portal, entering your citizenship, passport type, intended stay and any qualifying foreign visa or residence permit. The country you fly from alone does not determine whether you need a visa.

Do you need a visa for Georgia?

Visa-free entry based on citizenship

Georgia allows citizens of many listed countries to visit without obtaining a visa in advance. The one-year category includes citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the six GCC states: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.

The wording for that category is one full year, not “365 days per calendar year.” Do not treat January as a reset or assume that every visa-exempt nationality has the same permitted stay. The official tourism visa information provides an overview; use the consular check for your own circumstances.

Visa-free eligibility does not remove the need for supporting documents or determine the final border decision. It also should not be used as a substitute for checking requirements for employment, study or residence. Those purposes fall outside this tourist guide.

Entry using a foreign visa or residence permit

Some travellers who would otherwise need a Georgian visa can qualify through a visa or residence permit issued by a listed country. This is a separate route, generally allowing 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to the applicable conditions.

Check the document itself, its issuer, validity and any nationality-specific restriction. Living in another country is not enough without the qualifying status and evidence. A family member's eligibility also does not automatically establish yours.

If your document is being renewed, expires close to the trip or exists only as a temporary confirmation, ask the Georgian consulate which evidence it will accept before committing to travel. Describe the actual document rather than relying on a general question such as “Can residents visit?”

Georgia visa rules for GCC residents

GCC citizens and foreign residents of GCC countries should check different entry routes. A Saudi passport holder and an Indian or Pakistani passport holder living in Saudi Arabia do not automatically have the same conditions.

The Georgian Embassy's UAE guidance distinguishes UAE citizens' one-year visa-free stay from eligible UAE residents' 90 days in any 180 days. It says the UAE residence document must be valid on entry and departure.

A stricter condition applies to nationals of 17 specified countries using the relevant Gulf visa or residence-permit route: the qualifying document must have at least one year of remaining validity at entry, with a multiple-entry condition where a visa is used. This is not a blanket one-year requirement for every GCC resident.

The affected nationalities include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Uganda and Yemen. Georgia visa for Indian passport holders

An ordinary Indian passport does not by itself place the traveller in the general one-year visa-free category. A qualifying foreign visa or residence permit can change the entry route; otherwise, check whether you meet the current e-Visa conditions or need a consular application.

Use the official portal with both your passport nationality and your actual supporting documents. Avoid treating “Indian traveller from Dubai” as a complete eligibility description: the residence status and the documents carried matter.

For a family travelling together, make a separate check for each person. A spouse, child or other relative may hold a different passport or residence document. Resolve those differences before making bookings that cannot be changed.

Applying for a Georgian e-Visa

The official e-Visa FAQ says a decision takes at least five working days. Apply with a buffer; “at least” is not a guaranteed delivery date. Follow the portal's current nationality and document checks rather than assuming everyone can use the same application route.

For an e-Visa application, the FAQ specifies a passport issued within the previous ten years, at least two blank pages and validity extending at least three months beyond the requested visa's validity period. These are the published e-Visa passport conditions; do not turn them into a universal passport rule for every visa-free visitor.

Each traveller who needs an e-Visa must apply separately, including children. Check the issued document against the passport before departure and carry the required copy. If there is a mismatch, resolve it through the official process before travel.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Georgia in 2026?

Yes, for incoming tourists covered by Government Decree No. 602, effective from 1 January 2026. The Georgian Embassy's insurance notice sets out the main requirements:

• Health and accident insurance, with an insured amount of at least 30,000 GEL.
• Coverage throughout the visit, including arrival and departure dates.
• A policy available in Georgian or English, on paper or electronically.
• A policy from a Georgian or foreign insurance company.

The 30,000 GEL figure is the minimum insured amount, not the premium you pay. Compare the policy wording as well as the headline limit: benefit restrictions, deductibles and excluded activities affect what protection you actually have.

What should the policy document show?

Under Decree No. 602, the policy records the contracting parties, covered territory, insured subject, start and end times, insured risks, limits and premium/payment information.

Ask the insurer for a document that clearly identifies Georgia as covered territory and your full travel period. If using an existing annual or employer policy, obtain confirmation of the relevant cover instead of assuming a membership card is sufficient.

For family cover, check that every travelling person is identified and covered. If the policy groups several travellers under one contract, ask the insurer to explain the limits applying to each insured person. Carry a readable copy that makes the family members easy to identify.

Exemptions and special circumstances

The decree lists specific exceptions, including diplomatic and special visa or passport categories, accredited diplomatic personnel and qualifying family members, entry covered by relevant international agreements, and drivers involved in international road freight or passenger transport.

It applies to incoming tourists; this guide does not classify every residence, work or other non-tourist situation. If you rely on an exemption, obtain guidance for your exact status rather than assuming it from property ownership or a long previous stay.

Buying cover before departure

Arrange insurance before travelling and check when protection starts. Do not plan around buying a policy from a border officer or assume there will be a suitable product available when you arrive.

The e-Visa portal lists travel documents, evidence of purpose, accommodation, insurance and sufficient funds among its border-document requirements. Treat supporting evidence as part of preparation, rather than assuming a passport or approved visa answers every possible question.

Organise the folder around your actual trip: accommodation addresses for the nights booked, a clear route, transport arrangements and an explanation of how you will pay. If staying with someone, keep their address and contact details accessible. Do not present bookings or statements that misrepresent your plans.

Common mistakes to avoid

The biggest mistake is mixing rules from different entry routes. A passport-based exemption, a foreign-residence exemption and a Georgian e-Visa have different conditions. Check the one you will actually use.

Another is checking only the lead traveller's documents. Make a simple list for every person and confirm that the policy dates match the trip, including the departure day. Repeat the check if flights change.
