Overview
What to expect
This full-day private tour covers more of Georgia's history in eight hours than any other single day trip from Tbilisi — from the country's ancient spiritual capital to a Bronze Age cave city, with the 20th century's most controversial Georgian in between.
The day starts above Mtskheta at Jvari Monastery, the 6th-century UNESCO World Heritage church overlooking the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. From there, the route continues west to Gori, where an optional visit to the Stalin Museum offers one of Georgia's strangest and most thought-provoking hours — the dictator's preserved birth house, his armored railway carriage, and a museum that has itself become a historical artifact.
After lunch, explore Uplistsikhe, the rock-hewn cave town inhabited from around the 1st millennium BC — a warren of halls, wine cellars, and an amphitheater carved directly into the cliffs above the Mtkvari river. The day closes back in Mtskheta at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the 11th-century heart of Georgian Orthodoxy and part of the town's UNESCO listing.
Because the tour is private, the pace is yours — spend longer in the museum, linger in the caves, or adjust the route with your guide on the day.

Check TripAdvisorFrequently asked questions
- Is lunch included?
- Yes — lunch is included in the tour price, along with private air-conditioned transport, professional guide service, bottled water, and hotel pickup.
- Are the entrance fees included?
- Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral are free to enter. The Stalin Museum and Uplistsikhe each charge about 5 USD per person, paid on site — both visits are optional and the route works either way.
- Is the Stalin Museum worth visiting?
- It's one of Georgia's most unusual museums — part biography, part Soviet time capsule — and most visitors find the hour genuinely fascinating regardless of their view of its subject. If you'd rather skip it, your guide can extend the time in Uplistsikhe or Mtskheta instead.
- How much walking is involved?
- Uplistsikhe is the active part of the day — expect around an hour of walking and light climbing on uneven rock surfaces, so comfortable shoes matter. The other stops involve only short, easy walks.
- Is this tour suitable for children?
- Yes — the cave town is usually the highlight for kids, and as a private tour the pace adjusts to your group. Discounted rates for children are available, and infant seats can be arranged on request.
- Is hotel pickup included?
- Yes — pickup and drop-off from any hotel in Tbilisi is included, and custom pickup locations can be arranged during booking.
