Borjomi Travel Guide: Parks, Pools & How Long to Stay
Decide whether Borjomi deserves a day trip or an overnight stay, with practical advice on Central Park, sulfur pools, national-park walks and family logistics.

This Borjomi travel guide is for visitors who want mineral springs, forest walks and a slower stop in Georgia, the country in the Caucasus. The main planning decision is whether you want a few hours in the town park, an overnight spa break or a proper national-park hike. Those are three different trips, and separating them will help you avoid a rushed day with too much driving.
Is Borjomi worth visiting?
Borjomi earns its place when you want time outdoors without making dramatic mountain viewpoints the whole purpose of your holiday. Think of a park walk, lunch, a forest outing and an unhurried evening. If you only want a quick photograph before moving on, the journey may feel disproportionate to the time you spend there.
It is also useful as part of a trip through Samtskhe-Javakheti. However, being in the same region does not make every attraction close. Decide whether Borjomi is your place to rest or your base for excursions before reserving accommodation.
For a short first visit to Georgia, compare it with the other destinations already on your route. Borjomi lies in a different direction from Kazbegi. Adding both can work, but requires separate travel days and enough nights to make those journeys worthwhile.
Central Park and the national park are different places
Borjomi Central Park is the town attraction associated with the mineral spring, leisure walking and the route toward the outdoor sulfur pools. Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is a much larger protected landscape with hiking routes and visitor registration.
This distinction matters when you book a tour. “Visit Borjomi Park” may describe a stroll through the town park; it does not necessarily include a guided forest hike, equipment or transport to a national-park trailhead.
Ask the organizer to name the exact park and planned route. For a walking excursion, request the distance, elevation gain, expected duration and return arrangement. A route described simply as “easy” tells you little about whether it suits your group.
Things to do in Borjomi
Start with Central Park and the mineral spring
Give the town park a relaxed slot in your day rather than treating it as a five-minute stop. The official Borjomi destination guide identifies Ekaterine Spring as a central attraction and describes the park's shaded areas, cafes and family amusements.
Use the first part of the visit to get your bearings. Find the spring, decide how far everyone wants to walk and check the day's arrangements for any paid attractions. Keep ordinary drinking water with you rather than relying on a mineral-water tasting for the whole outing.
The spring visit is a cultural experience, not a reason to plan medical treatment. You can enjoy the setting without drinking the water or booking a wellness package. Children and adults who dislike the taste do not need to turn it into a challenge.
Allow enough time for the sulfur pools
The tourism board describes the forest walk to the pools as approximately 2.5 kilometres from Borjomi Park. That distance needs to be considered in both directions, with additional time for changing, bathing and breaks.
Before setting off, confirm whether the pools are open and what admission includes. Take swimwear, a towel, footwear suitable for the walk and a bag for wet clothes. On a cool day, dry clothing for the return is more useful than travelling with only swimming things.
Do not assume an outdoor mineral pool offers the same experience as a private hotel spa. Ask about changing facilities and privacy if these matter to you. With young children, decide whether the walk itself is a suitable outing even if you ultimately choose not to swim.
Plan a national-park walk separately
For hiking, start with the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park visitor information. The official site lists the Borjomi visitor centre at 23 Meskheti Street and asks visitors to register before entering the national park.
Explain your available time, walking experience and transport arrangements. Ask staff which route is appropriate for current conditions and whether you need a guide. Confirm where the walk finishes; an attractive route on a map may not return you to your starting point.
Carry food, drinking water, weather protection and a charged phone. Set a turnaround time that leaves daylight for the return. For an overnight route, organize shelter or camping arrangements separately rather than extending a day walk spontaneously.
Keep a town-based alternative
Not every day needs to become a hike. A slow meal and a shorter walk may be the better use of time after a long transfer, especially when several generations are travelling together.
The Borjomi Local Lore Museum offers another possible stop. Georgia Travel describes archaeology, ethnography and historical collections there. Check opening arrangements before making it the centre of a rainy-day plan.
Choose one extra activity that genuinely interests you rather than adding attractions to fill every hour. Borjomi is more rewarding when the pace matches the reason you came.
One day, one night or two nights?
A day trip: choose a limited visit
For a day trip from Tbilisi, focus on the town park, lunch and one optional activity. The official destination guide gives an approximate road journey of two hours from Tbilisi, but your actual door-to-door time can be longer with traffic, pickup and breaks.
Avoid combining a proper hike, the pools and several regional monuments into the same return journey. If the driver must get you back by a fixed time, agree on the departure from Borjomi before beginning an extended walk.
A day trip makes most sense when you are happy with an introduction. It is less suitable when you want to enjoy a hotel spa or leave room for changing weather.
One night: a better pace for the town
Arrive with time for lunch and Central Park, spend the evening locally, then use the next morning for another short outing. You get more usable time without needing a very early departure from Tbilisi.
Ask your accommodation about luggage storage if checkout comes before your afternoon transport. This small detail can determine whether your second day is comfortable or spent carrying bags between cafes.
Two nights: add one substantial activity
Two nights give you a full day between arrival and departure. Use it for a suitable national-park walk, a prearranged excursion or time at your hotel.
Keep a choice between an outdoor and indoor plan. Paying for two nights makes less sense if you immediately schedule long drives on both days; the point is to have time in Borjomi itself.
Getting there and planning onward travel
Choose transport around the entire journey. A private transfer can be convenient with children, luggage or a hotel outside the centre. Public transport may suit flexible travelers, but confirm current departure points, schedules and baggage arrangements locally before relying on a particular service.
Do not build a tight itinerary around an old railway timetable or a photograph of the Borjomi–Bakuriani train. Check that the service you want is operating on your date and have a practical road alternative.
For a private car, get the full quote in GEL and clarify whether it covers a one-way transfer or a day with waiting time. Specify hotel pickup, luggage, child seats if needed, meal breaks and any additional stops. Our private-driver guide explains what to compare.
If you are continuing toward Akhaltsikhe or Vardzia, treat that as a separate section of the itinerary. The national-park website places Vardzia about 110 kilometres from Borjomi, so it is a substantial excursion. Read the Vardzia visitor guide before deciding whether to visit from Borjomi or change your overnight base.
Where to stay: central Borjomi or a quieter property?
Choose central accommodation when you want to walk to meals and spend most of your time around town. Check the actual route from the hotel to the park rather than relying only on a map's straight-line distance.
A quieter property around Likani or outside the central area may work well for a stay focused on the hotel. Before booking, ask how you will reach restaurants and activities without a car. A secluded location is only relaxing if the practical arrangements suit you.
Compare room and facility details:
- Confirm heating or air conditioning for your travel dates.
- Ask whether pool and spa access is included in the room rate.
- Check children's admission rules and any reserved adults-only periods.
- Verify lifts, steps and vehicle access for older relatives or luggage.
- Ask which meals are available and whether dietary requests can be met.
- Check cancellation terms if your trip depends heavily on outdoor activities.
For Saudi and other Gulf travelers, discuss halal food needs directly with the property. A menu without pork does not establish how meat is sourced. Likewise, do not assume a spa or pool offers private use unless this is explicitly confirmed.
Costs to check before you go
Build your Borjomi budget from separate items: return or onward transport, accommodation if needed, meals, park admission, pool access and any guided activity. Ask whether children pay separately and whether equipment or towels cost extra.
Exact local tariffs can change, so confirm current amounts rather than combining prices from articles published in different years. Keep some GEL cash for smaller purchases while checking card acceptance with your accommodation and larger providers.
The biggest avoidable mistake is booking a cheap room far from the activities you want, then paying for repeated transfers. Compare the total stay cost, not just the nightly rate. Conversely, a more expensive hotel with facilities you never use may not be good value for a sightseeing visit.
If a supplier offers a combined tour, request the inclusions in writing. Park access, pool entry, lunch and a guide are separate services unless the booking clearly includes them.
Borjomi in autumn and winter
For an autumn visit, allow flexibility for rain and shorter daylight. Choose a walking plan that leaves time to return comfortably, and bring footwear you are willing to use on wet paths. Forest colours are a seasonal possibility, not something a particular date guarantees.
Winter changes the purpose of the trip. A comfortable hotel, town time and short walks may suit you better than an ambitious trail. Confirm local conditions and the operation of any attraction before travelling specifically for it.
Visitors seeking snow activities should plan those around the relevant resort and current conditions. Borjomi accommodation alone does not guarantee convenient access to skiing or snow on the ground.
In summer, shaded walks can be appealing, but do not assume the town will always feel cold. Pack for the forecast and choose accommodation with the facilities you need. Our season-by-season Georgia guide helps place the stop within a wider trip.
Build a route that leaves time for Borjomi
Choose your main purpose first: Central Park, forest hiking or a hotel break. Then allocate nights and transport around that choice, leaving optional activities genuinely optional.
Use TripMate's Georgia itinerary planner to fit Borjomi into your travel dates and preferred pace. Before booking, confirm transport, accommodation and the day's park arrangements with the relevant providers.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Borjomi worth visiting for one day?
- Yes, if you want Central Park, the mineral spring and a relaxed introduction to the town. Keep the programme limited when returning to Tbilisi the same evening; hiking and an extended pool visit need more time.
- How many nights should you stay in Borjomi?
- One night gives the town a more comfortable pace. Choose two nights if you want a full day for a suitable national-park hike or a hotel break without packing and travelling that morning.
- Is Borjomi Central Park the same as the national park?
- No. Central Park is the town leisure attraction. Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is a separate protected landscape with hiking routes and visitor registration. Ask a tour operator exactly which one is included.
- Can you visit Borjomi with young children?
- Yes, with a manageable walking plan and suitable accommodation. The forest walk toward the sulfur pools is longer than a short town stroll, so check distance, conditions and facilities before committing the whole family.
- Do you need a car in Borjomi?
- Not necessarily for a stay focused on central Borjomi. Accommodation outside the centre, trailheads and regional excursions require more transport planning. Confirm transfers before choosing a remote property.
